Craig Federighi Took Over Apple AI Management

Organizational Restructuring
Apple has made a fundamental change in its AI strategy, placing all AI operations under the direct oversight of Software Chief Craig Federighi. According to The Information report, delays in the development processes of Siri and Apple Intelligence features were influential in this centralized management decision. The Siri team, previously under a separate AI group, will now report to Federighi’s software department.
Technical Strategy and Infrastructure Preferences
The new management approach adopts a more cost-focused and efficient approach, unlike rivals’ massive infrastructure spending. Federighi prioritizes hardware optimization instead of large data center investments with uncertain returns. In this context, while the company uses external models such as Google Gemini, it also aims to shrink its own developed models so they can run on Apple hardware.
The main points in Apple’s updated technical roadmap are as follows:
- On-device Processing: Most consumer requests will be processed on local hardware to reduce latency and protect privacy.
- Private Cloud Compute: In cases where local processing power is insufficient, dedicated cloud servers based on Apple Silicon will come into play.
- Hybrid Model Structure: Large language models provided by external partners and Apple’s own efficient models will be used together.
