According to a Bloomberg-sourced report, Apple is making a major strategic change for CarPlay, its in-car interface. The company is preparing to open the platform to third-party AI providers such as OpenAI (ChatGPT), Google (Gemini), and Anthropic (Claude). While voice interactions in the current system are limited to Siri, the new update will allow developers to make their own AI assistants compatible with CarPlay.
Operating Principle and Integration
The new integration model will be offered as an alternative layer rather than disabling Siri completely. The system’s main technical details are as follows:
- Manual Launch: There will be no dedicated wake word for third-party assistants. Users will need to launch the app from the touchscreen.
- Voice Mode: When the app is opened, the voice chat interface will activate directly, thus preserving driver attention.
- Independent Operation: These tools will operate independently of the Siri infrastructure but will have to comply with CarPlay interface standards.
Security and Restrictions
To ensure in-car safety, Apple will not grant broad permissions to third-party apps. The capabilities of models such as ChatGPT or Gemini will be limited within a specific framework:
- Vehicle hardware functions (air conditioning, windows, driving modes) will not be controllable.
- Access to the iPhone’s core system settings will not be possible.
These restrictions aim to ensure that AI assistants are used only for obtaining information and answering complex queries. The support in question is planned to be delivered in parallel with iOS updates that are also expected to include improved Siri capabilities.
